Reflections on Leadership from Light MY Fire 2024 – The Woman’s Journey

The annual Stellenbosch Business Institute’s “Light MY Fire” learning experience, held on August 29, 2024, brought together senior female leaders on a Bryanston rooftop under the theme ‘A Woman’s Journey.’ This learning experience was not just a celebration of leadership but an exploration of the deeply personal and often complex paths that women navigate in their professional and personal lives.

Authentic Stories, Empowering Journeys

The essence of the journey lay in the power of storytelling. Thought Leaders Craig Wing, Nickey Seger, and Laura Wagner-Meyer, shared their personal journeys with raw authenticity, highlighting the victories and challenges that have shaped them. The symbolism of shoes, inspired by The Wizard of Oz, resonated throughout, representing the paths we walk, the choices we make, and the resilience required to continue forward.

Key Learning Points for Leaders

  1. Embrace Vulnerability: Leaders were encouraged to embrace vulnerability as a strength, not a weakness. Authenticity in leadership allows for deeper connections and a more resilient team. As Dr Craig Wing noted, “It’s in our imperfections that we find the strength to lead with empathy.”

  2. Value the Journey, not just the Destination: The metaphor of The Wizard of Oz served as a powerful reminder that the journey is just as important as the destination. Leaders were urged to focus on the lessons learned along the way, fostering growth and development within their teams.

  3. Champion Diversity: Nickey Seger highlighted the importance of diversity in leadership. She emphasised that diverse perspectives lead to innovative solutions and stronger, more inclusive teams. Leaders must create spaces where all voices are heard and valued.

  4. Resilience Through Adaptation: Laura Wagner-Meyer shared insights on how adaptability in the face of change is key to resilience. Leaders must be agile, ready to pivot, and equipped to guide their teams through uncertainty with confidence.

  5. Empower Through Mentorship: A recurring theme was the significance of mentorship. Leaders were encouraged to both seek out mentors and serve as mentors to others, fostering a cycle of growth and empowerment within the organisation.

Conclusion

Light MY Fire 2024 was a transformative experience, providing leaders with practical insights and a renewed sense of purpose. We underscored the importance of reflecting on our journeys, sharing our stories, and empowering others along the way. As we move forward, may we all walk our paths with courage, authenticity, and the wisdom gained from those who have journeyed before us.
